About the Collection

Seamless Tartans and Patterns are my digital tartan wallpapers and other repeating patterns, which I design, down to each and every pixel, to tile seamlessly. Many are interpretations of existing and/or official tartans; others use threadcounts that I invented myself.

Circa 2000, I decided to colorize the Tweed Pattern for Windows 3.

How I First Got Online

My first personal website was Vaughanster.com, which I established circa 2000. I served in the Republic of (South) Korea from the summer of 1996 until the summer of 1999, after which I was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

During a visit to my hometown of Ogden, Utah, Bryan Crimin, from my Ben Lomond High School Class of 1981, treated me to lunch at a restaurant.

Afterward, he took me to his house, where he showed me a room full of webserving computers, which belonged to a webhosting company called ProHosting. He persuaded me to establish Vaughanster.com, where I soon started publishing my seamlessly tileable plaid wallpapers.

From Tweed to Tartan

Inspired by the two-color, 8-by-8-pixel Tweed/Twill desktop Patterns from behind the wallpaper Windows 3, I colorized them to create seamlessly tileable tartan wallpapers for Windows Desktops and webpage backgrounds.

In order to tile properly, the threadcounts for these patterns need to be equally divisible by four. Although I tried to use official, historic threadcounts for many of my wallpapers, if their threadcounts weren't equally divisible by four, I would add or subtract one or two "threads," as necessary to make the counts equally divisible by four. Recently, I realized that I could simply multiply the threadcount by four, if necessary, to maintain the official threadcounts, but still cause my wallpapers to tile seamlessly.
